Reston, Va. – Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG), the leading source of global expertise for energy systems integration and operations, has hired Alejandro Moreno as Director of International Programs. Moreno joins ESIG with nearly 20 years of experience leading national-level energy and grid strategies, programs and partnerships.
Prior to joining ESIG, Moreno served in leadership roles in the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy division, most recently as the Acting Assistant Secretary and the Associate Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary. Moreno served as the senior career executive within the division, overseeing the Department’s annual investments across renewable energy, energy efficiency, transportation and fuels, industry, and advanced manufacturing.
“For 35 years, ESIG has been a trusted, unbiased resource for the people and organizations whose decisions form the foundations of the energy sector,” said Moreno. “At a time when the sector is changing across the globe and the demands placed on it have never been higher, growing ESIG’s reach internationally will provide critical support to ensure electricity and energy systems around the world expand and adapt in the most technically sound ways. I’m thrilled to join the staff and lead this important work.”
Prior to his time at the Department of Energy, Moreno spent five years at The World Bank Group, where he supported the development of energy policies and regulations to encourage investment in clean energy and energy efficiency. He started his career working on wind energy policy and market assessments within the United States Department of Energy, and developed and led the Department’s first water power research office. Moreno holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Stanford University.
“We’re exploring opportunities to bring ESIG’s proven approach of collaboration and convening to regions outside of the US,” said Debra Lew, Executive Director of ESIG. “Under Alejandro’s leadership, we aim to enable innovation and connection within the electricity sector around the world.”
While ESIG’s membership is global, its primary impact to date has been in the United States. Under Moreno’s leadership, ESIG will conduct thorough scoping and gap analyses to evaluate the pace and feasibility of successful organizational implementation in appropriate international regions. ESIG International will undertake both broad educational and deep technical analysis tailored to meet regional needs. More detailed information on ESIG International will be shared in the coming months.
