SUMMARY:Webinar: HECO Plans for Meeting Clean Energy Targets and Role of Grid Forming Inverters
DESCRIPTION:Download Presentation \nView Webinar Recording \nDownload Q&A Responses \n\nFeatured Speakers: Li Yu\, Manager\, Transmission Planning & Ken Aramaki\, Director\, T&D and Interconnection Planning\, Hawaiian Electric Company; \nLi Yu\nAbout the Webinar: Hawaiian Electric has been aggressively pursuing its renewable energy goals. In 2021\, Hawaiian Electric re-affirmed its commitment with a climate change action plan – to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 to 70% below 2005 levels\, and to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. The key to achieving these goals is to displace current synchronous generator resources with renewable utility-scale resources\, as well as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). These new resources will include high-amounts of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs)\, which fundamentally change the characteristics of the power system. The performance and characteristics of current IBRs (utility and distributed) are not where they need to be for high-IBR\, island grids with limited resources. As these resources continue to evolve in functionality\, Hawaiian Electric will need to continually assess\, adopt\, as well as push for higher levels of performance in order to achieve the Company’s and State’s policy objectives. \nThe presenters will provide an overview of Hawaiian Electric’s current progress\, challenges\, and opportunities seen from a utility planner’s perspective. This webinar will highlight the gaps found in recently completed stability analyses\, which will serve as an early indicator for utilities and vendors in their own pursuit of high-IBR systems. \nKen Aramaki\nAbout the Speakers: Li Yu is manager of transmission planning department in Hawaiian Electric Company\, leading transmission planning team perform long-term and near-team planning studies to support Hawaiian Electric Company completing 100% renewable system transformation. In the past ten years\, he has been working in both transmission and distribution planning\, DER interconnection studies\, both steady state and transient planning modeling and study. He obtained his PhD from Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 2013 and is an active member of IEEE and NERC working groups. \nKen Aramaki is the Director of Transmission\, Distribution\, and Interconnection Planning at Hawaiian Electric. In this role\, he leads a team that plans for the future of the T&D system as increasing levels of renewable inverter-based resources are added to the grid. While at Hawaiian Electric\, Mr. Aramaki has held various positions in Engineering\, Project Management\, and Planning & Technology. Mr. Aramaki was born and raised on the island of Kauai\, and holds a BSEE from the University of Portland and an MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Mr. Aramaki is a licensed Professional Engineer and a Project Management Professional. \nModerator: Julia Matevosyan\, Chief Engineer\, ESIG \nRegistration Cost: FREE \nQ&A Session: We will be using the slido platform for Q&A. Please submit your questions and follow-along during the event at this link.
