SUMMARY:Webinar: Market Design for Future Systems With a High Share of Renewable Energy: Fitness or Witless for Purpose?
DESCRIPTION:Download Presentation \nView Webinar Recording \n\n\nFeatured Speaker: Benjamin Hobbs\, Theodore and Kay Schad Professor of Environmental Management\, Johns Hopkins University \n \nAbout the Webinar: Today’s power market designs were fashioned primarily for systems with dispatchable\, non-storable generation– are those designs “fit for purpose” for tomorrow’s systems dominated by wind\, solar\, and battery resources? Although many of the fundamental principles will still apply in the future\, there are several reforms that will be critical if we want to get the full economic and emissions reduction benefits of renewables\, while keeping the lights on. These include addressing inconsistencies between retail and grid market incentives\, and creating level playing fields for flexibility services and contributions to reliability\, and expanding the time horizons and geography of spot markets. \nAbout the Speaker: Ben Hobbs is the Theodore and Kay Schad Professor of Environmental Management at JHU\, and a member of the ROSEI leadership council and JHU sustainability leadership council. He is also Chair of the California Independent System Operator’s Market Surveillance Committee\, on which he has served since 2002. He previously was on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University\, an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College\, Cambridge\, and on the research staff of Oak Ridge and Brookhaven National Laboratories. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of INFORMS. In 2021\, he received ESIG’s 2021 Energy Excellence Award for “for contributions to market design for a renewable energy future.” \nModerator: Charlie Smith\, Executive Director\, ESIG \nRegistration Cost: FREE \nQ&A Session: We will be using the slido platform for Q&A. Please submit your questions and follow-along during the event at this link.
