SUMMARY:Webinar: Stability Enhancement of Utility-scale Renewable Energy Plants in Weak Grids
DESCRIPTION:  \nDownload Presentation \nView Webinar Recording \nDownload Q&A \n\nFeatured Speaker: Behrooz Bahrani\, Senior Lecturer and the Director of the Grid Innovation Hub\, Monash University \nBehrooz Bahrani\nAbout the Webinar: Australia’s power system is undergoing a significant transformation with the retirement of thermal generation and the rapid growth of renewable inverter-based resources (IBRs). This shift has led to system strength-related challenges in several regions of the Australian power system\, which are expected to intensify in the future. To enable the widespread deployment of renewable energy resources\, particularly in weak parts of the network\, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) funded a two-year research project at Monash University in 2020. This webinar provides an overview of the project’s findings and developed solutions\, with a specific focus on grid-following and grid-forming inverter control strategies and synchronous condensers. The solutions aim to address the challenges of integrating IBRs into the power system and enable a smoother transition towards a cleaner energy future for Australia. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Behrooz Bahrani received the Ph.D. degree from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)\, Lausanne\, Switzerland\, in electrical power engineering\, in 2012. From 2012 to 2015\, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at several institutions including EPFL\, Purdue University\, Georgia Institute of Technology\, and the Technical University of Munich. Since 2015\, he has been with Monash University\, Australia\, where currently\, he is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of the Grid Innovation Hub. His research interests include control of power electronics systems\, applications of power electronics in power systems\, and grid integration of renewable energy resources. \nModerator: Julia Matevosyan\, Chief Engineer\, ESIG \nRegistration Cost: FREE \nQ&A Session: We will be using the slido platform for Q&A. Please submit your questions and follow-along during the event at this link.
