Plenary Session – Understanding the Physics – Markets Interface
Energy systems are evolving at a very rapid pace. This is being driven by increased penetrations of variable generation (wind and solar), increased electrification, and increased participation of the demand side. Maintaining reliability in a cost-effective manner within the energy system is fundamentally a balancing act between the physics (reliability) and markets (cost). As the physics changes (e.g. variable nature of wind and solar, increased use of inverter-based resources and increased number, diversity, and distribution of technologies) this balance is being challenged. New technology capabilities to enhance reliability and reduce costs need to be rewarded and incentivised (e.g. IBRs are very responsive) and their characteristics (e.g. variability and predictability of wind and solar) need to be accommodated and leading to necessary changes to market products and designs. This session will explore a few highlighted topics on this interface.

Breakout Session 1B – Security and Reliability in a Changing Energy System
The increasing amount of variable renewable energy is posing challenges to the reliability of the energy system and the security of energy supply. Some of these challenges can be met with introduction of new technologies for inverter-based generators to provide more stability at the source of generation. Other solutions include improved system monitoring, introduction of stabilising components at various levels of the energy system and changes in the energy market.

VIEW SESSION

Monday, Sept. 14 (6:00 p.m. US-EDT) / Tuesday, Sept. 15 (8:00 a.m. AUS) VIEW SESSION

Plenary Session – Customer-Grid Interface
With the widespread development of distributed energy resources (DER), customers are playing an increasingly important and active role in their interactions with the electricity grid. In particular, new technologies and commercial models are emerging that could profoundly change the way low-carbon power systems will be operated, designed and planned, starting right from the “edge of the grid”.

In this Session we will present fundamental techno-economic aspects of these transformations at the customer-grid interface based on international experiences that in some cases are world-first, and we will discuss technical, commercial and regulatory constraints as well as enabling mechanisms to boost DER options at the customer premises which can enable an affordable and reliable transition towards low-carbon futures.

VIEW SESSION

Thursday, Sept. 17 (2:00 a.m. US-EDT) / Thursday, Sept. 17 (4:00 p.m. AUS) VIEW SESSION

Breakout Session 2B – Managing High Penetrations of DER
Australia’s electricity system is transitioning to become one of the world’s most decentralised. Increasingly, significant parts of the system are experiencing periods where 100% or more of instantaneous demand is being served by DERs located at the polar opposite extremity of the grid from traditional generation. This session will explore the physics-based realities of enabling such a profound transformation illustrated by relevant case studies from the very different contexts of remote Western Australia and the United Kingdom.

VIEW SESSION

Monday, Sept. 21 (11:00 p.m. US-EDT) / Tuesday, Sept. 22 (1:00 p.m. AUS) VIEW SESSION

Plenary Session – The Evolving Transmission-Distribution Interface
As power systems around the world evolve, we see ever increasing amounts of distributed energy resources added to the distribution system. These resources take the form of generation, batteries and smart loads. All of these resources are making a meaningful contribution to improved power system outcomes for consumers but are creating challenges for the traditional ways of managing a power system. Specifically, we see a blurring of the line between transmission and distribution and how the systems are planned and operated. Issues such as planning and forecasting for future grid development in now more complicated and takes more time and different techniques to analyse. The modelling of the power system needs to evolve to take into account the significant resources in the distribution system and their contribution to the power system as a whole. Solutions to maintaining stability, power quality and operational efficiency need to be found. This may take the form of technical engineering solutions or market led solutions. This session will focus on:

  • Forecasting and planning
  • Modelling the power and energy systems
  • Local flexibility markets for system wide operation
  • Maintaining stability, power quality and operational efficiency

Breakout Session 3A – Adapting to Increasing Decentralisation and Variable Energy Sources
Technology developments are enabling consumers and businesses alike to both control and supply their energy needs in new and exciting ways that have massive benefits and challenges to the traditional electricity grid. Far from remaining inflexible and static, this session will show the many ways new developments are being assessed, integrated and continuing to develop in recent times across all regions, especially in South Australia. This session will not only highlight the change that is occurring, but the technological and market challenges that must be solved sooner rather than later to ensure these high-speed changes continue to occur safely, sustainably and within reasonable economic boundaries.

Breakout Session 3B – Transformation of the Energy Value Chain
New distributed energy technologies (especially renewables), digitalisation and customer behaviour are blurring traditional energy chain boundaries at exponential pace, which means that the energy industry needs to essentially ‘rewire’, while ‘keeping the lights on’.
