Research & Education

Tom Acker: Tom Acker is a Senior Principal Engineer of Research at Salt River Project (SRP) based in Arizona, focusing on energy research and innovation. He has a background in engineering and has been involved in research related to power systems, renewable energy, and grid modernization.

Topics covered by this working group are biased towards the longer term and include the incorporation of a high share of renewable energy in the future energy supply, and the understanding and analysis of the interactions among energy systems (electric, fuel, thermal) and other infrastructures (transportation, water, communication and data systems). Specific related projects include the road-mapping activities associated with the Towards 100% workshop, and the Global Power System Transformation (G-PST) initiative. The educational needs for the present and future challenges are also covered, as is the development of a massive, open, online course (MOOC).

G-PST Pillar 3: Foundational Workforce Development Materials

Led by Imperial College London, the Global Power System Transformation Consortium’s (G-PST) Pillar 3 efforts focus on workforce development to enable power system transformation at both the university and professional levels. G-PST’s Teaching Agenda topics are being developed into cutting-edge teaching and training materials which can be incorporated selectively into an existing curriculum or training program.

University of Minnesota CUSP Program

The vision behind the University of Minnesota’s CUSP™ is to provide all the resources an instructor needs in teaching his/her own courses in the field of Electric Energy Systems with an emphasis on sustainability. This effort has been funded from various organizations including NSF, ONR (Office of Naval Research), NASA and EPRI and is totally free-of-cost under the Terms of Use conditions.
