What can be learned from experiences in the U.S. and Europe to date before the next wave of large loads from data centres and industrial electrification enters the connection queue?

On 28 September, ESIG in collaboration with Energynautics, is hosting a one-day Large Loads Workshop preceding the Energynautics Wind & Solar Integration Workshop in Porto, Portugal, to share best practices and exchange knowledge on forecasting and modelling large loads, planning for the flexibility they can (and can’t) provide, and connecting them to the grid without compromising its reliability.

Discussions will highlight lessons learned from utilities, regional system operators, and other European and American experts.

The day will open with a selection of keynotes that frame how load is changing on both continents, and will be followed by three technical panels covering:

  • load forecasting for transmission and resource planning (incl. flexibility & resource adequacy)
  • connecting large loads (queue processes, connection studies)
  • grid reliability with large loads (stability, modelling, performance requirements)

Registration will be available from 15 June, 2026 on the Energynautics Wind & Solar Integration Workshop website.

*The ESIG Large Loads Workshop is not included in the general participation fee of the Wind & Solar Integration Workshop.

Accommodations

The Large Loads Workshop will be held at the venue of the 25th Wind & Solar Integration Workshop, the Pestana Douro Riverside. Special room rates are available as part of the Wind & Solar Integration Workshop hotel block. The special offer is available with the promo code GIW2026 and is valid through July 27, 2026 (subject to availability).
