Featured Speaker: Jenny Riesz, Manager, Operational DER Management Team, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)

About the Webinar: The South Australian power system is a 1-3GW grid that separates about once per year from the rest of the Australian National Electricity Market, and which is anticipated to reach periods with more than 100% of energy supplied by small-scale rooftop photovoltaic systems in the next 6-12 months. This presentation will share the operational risks identified, and the measures implemented to allow this grid to operate securely and reliably. This includes quantifying distributed PV shake-off in power system disturbances, development of power system models to represent this behavior, updates to power system stability limits to incorporate this behavior, implementing the ability to actively manage distributed PV systems in extreme events, and implementing operating procedures for very high PV periods when South Australia is operating as an island. This will include lessons learned during application of these procedures in November 2022 where South Australia operated as an island through a very high PV generation week following an unplanned separation due to storm damage to the interconnector.

About the Speaker: Dr. Jenny Riesz is the Manager of the Operational Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Management team at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). She leads a team in AEMO Operations responsible for integration of distributed resources into operational functions.

Moderator: Charlie Smith, Executive Director, ESIG
