Featured Speaker: Steven Sano, Manager – Protection Department, Hawaiian Electric Company

About the Webinar: Hawaiian Electric’s Protection Roadmap looks at the possible changes that will be needed to the grid’s electrical protection systems in response to the increasing levels of inverter-based resources (IBR) at all levels of the electrical system. Historically, our protection systems have been based on a “strong grid” consisting of centralized, transmission-level rotating synchronous generator power plants. Our roadmap looks at the evolution of these protection schemes to a future with shorter critical clearing times, lower fault currents, and uncertain directional performance.

Steven Sano

About the Speaker: Steven Sano received his BSEE from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI in 1984 and has 31 years of experience at Hawaiian Electric Company. He has been the manager of the Protection Department for the past 13 years as the company makes the transition to a clean renewable energy future.

Moderator: Charlie Smith, Executive Director, ESIG

Registration Cost: FREE

Q&A Session: We will be using the slido platform for Q&A. Please submit your questions and follow-along during the event at this link.
