Webinar: Interconnection of Wind and Solar Power Plants to Weak Grids
August 24, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Featured Speaker: Sebastian Achilles, Managing Director of Power Systems Planning and Operation at GE Energy Consulting. His team activities include converter, turbine and plant level control design of GE Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) in aspects related to grid performance. His experience includes the configuration of converter and plant level controls in complex wind generation applications. His team responsibilities also include grid studies associated to PV solar generation, thermal generation and FACTs. He was secretary of the CIGRE B4.62 working group on Connection of Wind Farms to Weak AC Networks and he is the US representative of CIGRE B4.
Moderator: UVIG Board President, Mark Ahlstrom, NextEra Energy Resources
Registration Cost: Free
Additional Information: This webinar will address the issues which can arise when wind and solar power plants operate in weak AC systems and how to improve the performance of these systems. Wind and solar power plants are increasingly located in weak parts of the transmission system, and use power electronic converters for delivering their power output to the transmission system. We will cover a number of factors which may limit the ability to connect these plants to weak ac systems, including the fast dynamic response of wind generator converter systems following system disturbances, and the interactions between wind generator converter systems, power system, and other power electronic driven network assets (e.g. HVDC links and FACTS devices) in the vicinity. Guidelines for screening of potential connection points, selection of dynamic models, and possible avenues for mitigating these issues will be discussed.
Attendees will be able to ask questions following the presentation.
