Featured Speaker: Simon Tweed, Future Operations, EirGrid

Simon Tweed

About the Webinar: Over a decade ago the TSOs of Ireland (EirGrid) and Northern Ireland (SONI) commenced a journey to transform the operation of the power system on the Island of Ireland to be able to integrate non-synchronous renewable generation – mainly from wind. Today, they operate the power system with up to 75% of our demand being met by wind and other non-synchronous generation sources. This presentation provides an overview of this journey; from identification of the power system challenges to the technical and market solutions developed to overcome them. These solutions include development of a new RoCoF standard, Control Centre Tools and new System Services market arrangements.

About the Speaker: Since graduating with an Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree from Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland, Simon Tweed has gained over 25 years’ experience in the electricity industry. Simon worked with transmission and distribution companies in Great Britain before joining ESB National Grid, which later became EirGrid, the Transmission System Operator in Ireland. His experience ranges from transmission planning, power system operations and market design. Previously Simon was the lead engineer overseeing the day to day operation of EirGrid’s National Control Centre (NCC) which is responsible for the real-time operation of the transmission system in Ireland and management of world-leading levels of non-synchronous renewable generation on the power system. Simon is now part of EirGrid’s Innovation and Planning department and is leading the development of future operational solutions that will allow Ireland to achieve its ambitious renewable energy integration targets.
