Featured Speakers: Juha Kiviluoma, Principal Scientist, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland; Clayton Barrows, Senior Researcher and Group Manager, NREL

Juha Kiviluoma

About the Webinar: System operators are interested and involved in the development and application of open-source tools, which is a focus of the G-PST Pillar 5 work. But what are the steps that are required before open-source tools can become adopted by professionals in the field? What would motivate system operators to use open-source tools? What existing examples are there and what initiatives are ongoing that can facilitate the journey towards professional-grade open source tools? These and other questions will be explored in this webinar.

About the Speakers: Juha Kiviluoma is currently a Principal Scientist in Design and Operation of Energy Systems research node at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He has a PhD degree from engineering physics at Aalto University. He has participated in the development of several energy system models and tools including WILMAR, Backbone, IRENA FlexTool, SpineOpt, Spine Toolbox and Predicer. Juha’s main research interest is in modelling energy systems with qualifications in data management, problem formulation, model formulation, generation planning, unit commitment and dispatch, power system reserves, market design, capacity adequacy, and energy resources.

Clayton Barrows

Clayton Barrows is the Group Manager of the Grid Operations Planning Group in the Grid Planning and Analysis Center at NREL. His research interests include power system modeling, complex system optimization, network science and modeling software design. He received his B.S., Electrical Engineering, from the University of Wyoming, and his Ph.D., Energy and Mineral Engineering, from Penn State University.

Moderator: Charlie Smith, Executive Director, ESIG
